A Smile a Day

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”- Hebrews 13:16

Last week I had multiple reminders of the profound joy that comes when we LIVE TO BLESS. There is nothing that feels as purposeful and productive as pouring into the life of someone else. When we give time, attention, encouragement, care, and resources to others in need there comes an infusion of life and an increase of joy for all parties involved. Proverbs 11:25 speaks this truth, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

My blessing mode became a double portion as I was able to support and speak life into two fellow pastors. One was at a lunch meeting and the other was on a phone call. One is seeking clarity for the next season, while the other was needing assistance with a church property item. For one I was able to provide encouragement and perspective; for the other I was able to draw from my own experience of navigating a property transaction/transition. Although the needs were different, the outcome was similar, as both expressed a sense of immense gratitude for the support I provided. One pastor shared that my counsel was the most impactful they had received during this season of seeking God. My other friend sent an email update stating that my advice helped to move the property project forward. He joyfully wrote, “It’s your coaching man! I sent an email to the property manager that received approval. Hallelujah!” Both times left me feeling grateful and motivated to bless even more people.

The call for us to bless others harkens all the way back to the covenant God made with Abraham. In Genesis 12:2-3 the Lord declares, “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” As we continue in our 21 Day Easter Fast (March 21-April 11), one of the key faith tasks is to DO GOOD FOR OTHERS. Last week we were to offer a daily prayer for someone that needs Jesus. My joy meter again reached its apex as I prayed for a young family who lives across the street from us. This week our blessing goal is to do a good deed for someone. Look for opportunities to give, to help, to be a listening ear, to offer a helping hand, to provide your time and expertise to a specific need. As we live to bless, our hearts will be filled, and other’s hearts will come to faith in Jesus! Let’s find life, purpose, and satisfaction in what Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
