Believer's Guide to the Election

The lot puts an end to quarrels and decides between powerful contenders.”- Proverbs 18:18

Is your blue recycle bin filled with voting pamphlets/materials? Do you find yourself muting the television or radio every time an ad for a candidate or proposition pops up? Are you pretending that Tuesday, November 3rd has been removed from the calendar or quietly passes by without any fanfare or drama?

With this presidential election taking place in a year unlike any other, the stakes, tensions, and unknowns seem to be at an all-time high. Over the month of October our church family prepared for this season by looking to God’s Word for direction, calling to the Lord in prayer, and fasting for true breakthrough to take place. I want to believe for God’s miracle power to deliver healing, restoration, and peace to our hurting, broken, and divided land.

Let me share three things to guide us beyond Tuesday, which will help us once the ballots have been cast, counted, and a winner declared.

1) Remember that some people will be REELING from the results.

No matter who wins the election and takes office in January 2021, there will be a great number of people unsettled and upset. As believers we can lead the way and shine the light by showing compassion; looking for opportunities to pray/speak comfort to those who are hurting, angry, and afraid; and sharing the good news message of the forever love and hope of Jesus.

2) Remember that we are called to PRAY for our LEADERS.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 commands us, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” Whether President Trump is re-elected, or Mr. Biden becomes the 46th President, we need to lift these men up in prayer. We recognize both candidates, and the parties they represent, are imperfect. They need God’s wisdom and grace to lead our nation. Let’s pray blessing over their lives; protection over their bodies and families; that they would lead with humility, integrity, and charity; and that the Lord would surround them with godly women and men, to help uphold the laws, freedoms, and best policies for the welfare of all who call America home.

3) Remember that Sunday is Coming, and Jesus is the True King!

Let us invite the Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, rule our thoughts, and fix our passion and hope on Jesus alone! Our identity, our joy level, our futures are not attached to earthly events, treasures, or securities. The 2020 Year and Election must give way to the True and Timeless Savior! Hebrews 13:8 reminds and reassures us of the greatest results of victory, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
