Light(IN) Up

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”- Ephesians 5:8

The Light is Right! Light is a precious commodity and absolute necessity that is almost impossible to live without. When a lightbulb is not turning on, we feel the impact (darker room, can’t read something, tripping hazards everywhere), so we go to replace it. Sometimes we will find that the bulb is defected/died out (the sound of a loose/broken off filament), but other times we delightfully discover the issue was a loosened connection from the light socket. Our connection to Jesus is vital for direction, empowerment, and sustainability. John begins his gospel with the miracle of light entering our world, “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (1:4-5)

The Light is a Must! Some of us (me included) are over the cold weather and cloudy skies, taking over what was once known as “Sunny California”. Even the recent Daylight Savings (Spring Forward) reminds us how wonderful and beneficial it is to have longer days back again. Recently, I have been contemplating the illuminating and impacting work of light in our life. Without the natural light darkness dominates, chaos ensues, and life stops. Even Jesus used the imagery of a working day to convey His work in the world. In John 9:4-5 He said, “As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

The Light needs to be Turned On! As we look at the different areas in our life, let’s ask the Lord to shine His light on the broken places that need replacing and the lost connections that need tightening. The Lord wants to address any areas in us that are in the dark and adjust any areas that are not operating at full power! In Ephesians 5:8 Paul writes, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light.”

Perhaps the light needs to be turned on in the following places:

- Get to church every Saturday (longer days means no more driving at night).

- Get rid of a sullen countenance, negative speech, and darkened thinking.

- Get faith growing through Bible reading, prayer, worship, and listening to the Holy Spirit.

- Get God’s light out to others through kind words and good deeds.

- Get at least one person to join you on Easter to find out about the Jesus.

The Light is Not Broken! There is more shine God can bring your way. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
