The Eyes Have It
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you.”- Psalm 32:8
Love at first sight. There is something beautiful and even indescribable that happens when we truly love someone. I know the full array of feelings that came as my relationship with Joanie blossomed. And words cannot do justice to seeing each of my children for the very first time. No wonder we see so many stories, songs, and poems in the Bible celebrating the gift of love and the legacy of family! One beautiful account that shows the power of what love can do is when Isaac meets Rebekah for the first time. Genesis 24:67 says, “Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”
Love at first sight is nice, but a love that lasts is far better! In 1 Corinthians 13:8 Paul writes, “Love never fails.” I can say emphatically and unequivocally that going on 27 years I still look at my bride with such affection and awe in the gift God has given me in her. And this week I caught myself staring at one of my kids, beyond blessed at the way they are growing up into all God made them to be!
This Valetine’s week may each of us receive the perfect gift of God’s love in a fresh way. God loves us in such a way that it marks us as a beautiful and invaluable treasure. This unmatched love was on full display as God delivered Israel out of Egypt, guided and provided for them in the wilderness, and established them in an expansive land of promise. Deuteronomy 14:2 declares, “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God…the Lord has chosen you to be His treasured possession.”
Not only was God’s love on full display then, but it is overflowing your way today! The love of the Father and our Savior is at work all the time watching over us, providing our needs, delivering us from all enemies, giving good gifts for the here and now, and rich deposits for all that is still to come. His eyes are on you to keep you; His heart is for you to show mercy towards you; His arm is reaching out to draw you near. Don’t believe the lie that you are unworthy or unlovable. Don’t allow rejection in you relationships to inform you about God’s love. Don’t lose sight of the one who loves you intensely and intently! Today, receive the perfect Valentine love letter as written in Jeremiah 31:3, “The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
